Good morning! Today we have dawned on white in Cenicero. Shall we talk a little about winter, snow and vineyards?
Now the vines are in a period of resting stage or dormancy. In this stage, due to the adverse climate conditions, the vine reduces its activity to a minimum. But snow has very beneficial effects on vine. It cleans wood, removes mold and produces a "disinfectant" that cleanses the plant. And this must be added the valuable contribution that water is slowly penetrating the ground.

The Rioja Control Board of the QDO Rioja has "really good" harvest expectations for 2014, after which analyzed the first 10 million liters of wine.

In this aspect, all the wines from Rioja must undergo chemical and organoleptic testing "to determine if the wine produced deserves the Qualified Designation of Origin". The pre-qualification to have the right to belong to the QDO Rioja influenced the improvement of the winemaking process.

Quality control ranges from the aging process to marketing, moment at which the Council will deliver to the wineries the label which guarantees the origin, vintage and aging of the wines.

For this year, the forecast is to be counted with about 7300 samples in total.

Rioja wines will have a final vintage rating for the next month of April or May.

The Rioja Control Board of the Q.D.O. Rioja has organized a tasting of wines of the vintage 1964 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of which is considered one of the legendary vintages of this appellation. Eleven wineries have contributed their wines for this tasting that will be revealed one of the most unique qualities of the wines of Rioja, as is its ability to aging, which reaches its full potential in such exceptional quality vintages such as the 64.

The tasting was held on Monday, November 24, at the Hotel Wellington in Madrid and was led by Pedro Ballesteros, unique "Master of Wine" in Spain, and presented by the president of the Control Board, Luis Alberto Lecea.

The event, with the exclusive participation of slightly more than fifty journalists experts in the area and prescribers. The Riojan sommelier Carlos Echapresto, technical coordinator of the tasting for selection and conservation of wines, was responsible for leading the service.

This was the second commemorative wine tasting of the vintage 1964 organized by the Control Board, after the meeting in London on September 30 for a select group of journalists and buyers from the UK, including opinion leaders as recognized in the wine world as Jancis Robinson and Steven Spurrier.

Our harvest data

04 November 2014

Nearly a month ago we finished to harvest the last plot of Bodegas Riojanas

Our harvest data

The weather conditions throughout the entire growth cycle of the vineyard made us to presage that both the quality and quantity of grapes would be high, a fact that we found on visits to the different plots of vineyards in order to monitor the maturation.

In the second week of September rained forty liters per square meter, which did not favor the correct final ripening of the grapes. This amount of rainfall associated with high temperatures, not according to the time of the vineyard, did increase the risks associated with grape rotting.

The Technical Department of Bodegas Riojanas, decided to start a few days earlier than we had initially thought, preferring to harvest grapes with a lower alcohol content, than waiting to harvest more rotten grapes.

This decision was a great success, as while the harvest progressed the state of health of the grapes was getting worse, appearing threats of Botrytis. This required the vinegrowers perform a selective harvest, collecting only grapes that were in optimum health.
Keep in mind that our winery has a special dedication in aging wines, specially Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reservas wines; so the grapes have to be as healthy as possible to age for a long period of time in oak.

After tasting wines from the 2014 campaign, we can say that the quality of the wines is high, but still have to wait that the malolactic fermentation is over, to say that thanks to the decision to advance vintage wines produced are excellent.

The harvest data:
- Total kilos made between Bodegas Riojanas in Cenicero and San Vicente de la Sonsierra: 4,000,000 kilos
- Start day of harvest in Cenicero: September, 23rd., End day of harvest: October, 11st.

The 2014 vintage has been completed in the QDO Rioja with results better than those of last year both quantitatively and qualitatively. The Technical Services Control Board have offered an initial interim report of the harvest, which puts the final amount raised around 434 million kg. of grapes, of which 398 million are red grapes and 36 million are white. This production corresponds to the productive potential that currently QDO Rioja according to the limitation of maximum yields per hectare set for this season.

After a growing season with a very favorable climate, the Rioja vineyards exhibited excellent vegetative and health status at the end of ripening, allowing to have good expectations for the vintage in quantity and quality, which improve the results of the two previous years. On the whole it can be said that these expectations have been met, although unlike the rest of the cycle, the weather that has accompanied some of the harvest days has not been ideal.

Made with tempranillo grapes from Cenicero, it has a classic elaboration with destemmed and crushed grapes with controlled fermentation and long maceration periods. Aged in American oak barrels for 24 to 30 months, following a minimun of 2 years in the bottle before release.

This is a wine with intense cherry-red color and brick rims. Very powerful in aromas, its vinous character harmonizes perfectly with excellent wood notes. The palate is tasty, full-bodied and rich of tannins very polished and softened. Quite expressive in the mouth with a balance of good tannins and a very good aftertaste.

The quality and depth of this wine makes it possible to harmonize with different culinary compositions, but is especially recommended for stewed or roasted red meats.

A key element of identity of Riojan wines is the ageing in wood barrels as a complement of its evolution.

The ageing of wine. A matter of experience

Only a group of complex varieties have the gift of ageability (or bear specific qualities that help to age well). Tempranillo belongs to this select group, together with other minority varieties.

Not all wines are good candidates for ageing. The wine to be aged need to bear certain components such as alcohol, tannins, acids, colour, etc. in the level and proper proportions. Those selected wines are such because they certainly have the necessary qualities to improve their organoleptic properties over time.

During the time that the wine remains in wood, it experiments a quiet and continuous development. Yhe primary fruity flavours decrease and as the wine is aged, it builds up more complexity, mellowing and enhancing with different aromas and flavours. This evolution is due to the contact with the wood itself on the one hand, and on the other, to the gradual oxygenation of the wine.
This conveys a remarkable transformation that is going to depend on factors like the time spent in the barrel, the type of barrel and the environmental conditions in the wine cellar, among others.

As we know, Rioja wines are classified according to the ageing periods in cask and bottle, as Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva.

The new cycle begins with vine pruning, an agricultural task that is crucial in the process and end up marking many of the guidelines to winemaking.
Pruning is essential and basic.

After harvesting the vine leaf falls while the sap down to the trunk to accumulate there and form winter reserves will force the new sprouting. With pruning try to limit the production of the plant, giving consistency to the strain and facilitate the work of soil tilth.

Pruning may seem at first glance a simple task, but in truth, is one of the most important and critical tasks that determines the final quality of the wines. You must have extensive knowledge of the vineyard, and soil and climate.

Their team of providers performs some controls ripening grapes to facilitate technical information sector harvest dates based on each location, depending on the evolution of the vineyard.

The objective of this sector advisory work, which is "vital", is to achieve that the vines are harvested in the optimal moment.

These controls are initiated at the final stage of the crop cycle and end when the collection begins in each area , for which more than 62,000 acres of the QDO Rioja is divided into 20 zones, which are selected on a number of vineyards .

According to the surveys carried out to date in the campaign of 2013, the health of the grapes in the whole Appellation is "good", with a very balanced maturation, which seems to indicate that Rioja wines of the harvest 2013 will be very good.

To achieve these results, innovative nanotechnology and biotechnology techniques are applied in both the vineyard and the winery. But, as Pablo Orio (director of the R&D department of Bodegas Riojanas) points out, each winery uses the techniques it considers most effective to increase resveratrol content and highlights the importance of the "healthy wine" project for the bodega.

It is always good to read good news and Rioja is fashionable today in the United States and, with a little of luck and hard work, we can turn this country in our main market without going into the battle of young wines, but with what we know best make is nothing that we have done throughout the history of Rioja: Reservas and Gran Reservas wines, the wines that give us more value.
